Well they were some kind of weird mill beatdown deck in the manga and they do things.
So first off, let's just go through the cards each individually
Royalty: King and Queen
King and Queen are cards that both special summon themselves upon the opponent adding a monster card to their hand. Queen also does something additional upon summon by summoning a level 7 earth warrior from the hand or grave. This is kind of useful since they both kind of act like Gizmek cards, forcing your opponent to waste resources turn one to remove beaters on the field so their disrupts actually work, effectively making your opponent's first turn really awkward.
Foot Soldiers: The Pawn and The Castle with legs? (why does the rook even move in chess?)
These are your, uh, consistency boosters. Pawn can search promotion upon attacking directly (which it can do even if your opponent controls a monster). Sadly the only good target for the main phase 2 with promotion is U.A. Player Manager thanks to it's ability to pop a card. It can also search any earth warrior monster if you banish it from the grave! By allowing your opponent to search any monster non-conditionally! Hooray! I mean, I guess it's supposed to enable Puppet Queen and King, but it kind of doesn't do too well at that. As for Rook, it doesn't do much besides dumping pawn.
The backrow: War and UPGRADES PEOPLE
Promotion can send any 1 level 1-3 earth warrior to get a 4+ one. That sounds great, until you realize that all the earth warrior cards in those categories aren't game breaking, or even good. I thought it was a huge range myself, and then I looked it up and said, "Wow, this is some serious smoldering garbage" (except for the U.A. and new Heroic cards, those are okay I guess). Oh yeah, and there's also Battlefield Tragedy which was ran by the same character as this deck. We don't talk about it however.
now for the good stuff:
Their niche: why they aren't completely unplayable like AOJ
They have the ability to abuse Isolde's search effect because they can summon monsters during your opponent's turn thanks to Puppet Queen. This allows you to search U.A. Blockbacker with Isolde and summon it with puppet queen after your opponent searches a card (or search puppet queen if you already have blockbacker). Also, as stated in the first part, Puppet Queen and Puppet King do act kind of like pseudo hand traps. Finally, thanks to the fact that it's just general earth warriors, cards like Junk Forward and War Rock Gactos are appreciated.
wow that was short, time for the long stuff: the cons
Con 1: they are missing pieces
Their main deck is too small for them to be a proper deck honestly. It's like trying to build star warriors, and then you realize star warriors have hardly any cards at all in the main deck, so you fill it with mediocre level 5 warriors. They're still missing the knight and bishop so hopefully they get those in a year. Considering the fact that this deck is supposed to be a beatdown deck, they'll hopefully have decent stats and can summon themselves easily. Or maybe they could use a good extra deck card, who knows.
seriously, if we're getting DM and Yugioh R stuff for nostalgia bait, can we at least get more non-fusion extra deck monsters
Con 2: Pawn's search has too much Chess lore
I get what pawns search effect is based on: give your opponent a piece so you can reach your objective easier, but unless your Generaiders that doesn't work well in this game. A continous (or preferably field) spell can compensate this. The ideal field spell would be one that makes it so it negates the effects of a monster your opponent searches out while you control a puppet until the end of the next turn (or preferably your next turn) which would make it so even if your opponent searches Nibiru with pawn, they won't be able to use it, plus it would act as a disruptor. Just something that can to replace DD designator. Prohibition can at least be kind of good if used going second, and it murders in a Skystriker or Scrap (best deck) match up. But Designator does nothing, and you can't afford to use it blindly going first unlike prohibition.
Con 3: Earth Warrior Sucks
Puppets are supposed to be the Guardragon of earth warrior, which sounds crazy until you remember what was mentioned previously, the fact that earth warrior isn't that good. It might be because Isolde is preventing Konami from getting extra dangerous with their warrior designs due to fear. But oh well, I guess that's how the cookie crumbles. Because this deck is supposed to be used as an engine and the things that can use it aren't fantastic, it will come out really mediocre future support of not. As a result, what it needs is just another good earth warrior archetype to be released and maybe this deck might have a chance at becoming ok. Not sure if anyone want's "Guardragon 2: Sword and Shield edition" though.
The future of Puppets: We need more beatdown decks
We genuinely need more beatdown decks in this game, and puppets are going in that direction. Now, they aren't going fast, but at least they're going. It's a kind of deck that is hardly talked about anymore so bringing more of them into the game would be great as it helps diversify playstyle and allows players to think more critically when going first as they might need to use disruptions more carefully. Not to mention it would attract new players and veterans since playing a deck that can bust those 7+ negate boards they complain about would be extremely satisfying for them. I've even heard some players got back into the game because of Pure Gizmek even though that deck isn't even too amazingly stunning. I understand that it's a bit small brain, but we need those decks that have a lower skill ceiling anyways (once again, for new players or maybe your friend who doesn't want to memorize the entire dictionary just to play a modern deck).
But to be honest I'm just saying this because I want pure beatdown scraps to be the best way to play plain scraps again
Anyways here's a video I made with them winning the dumbest duel ever, enjoy:
